Farm Terminology

 Animals
 
Cattle: bovine animal, commonaly refered to as a cow
Cow: the mature female of a bovine animal
Bull: uncastrated male bovine that has reached sexual maturity around 1 year of age
Calf: the young of the bovine animal
Heifer: a young cow over one year old that has not produced a calf
Steer: a male bovine that is castrated before sexual maturity
Beef Cattle: an adult cow, steer, or bull raised for its meat
                                                      Dairy Cattle: cows raised mainly for their milk
 

Swine: the domesticated hog
Pig: a young swine of either sex weighing less than 120 pounds
Hog: Swine weighing 120 pounds or more
Sow: an adult female swine
Boar: uncastrated male swine that has reached sexual maturity at about 6 months of age
Piglet: the young swine
Gilt: a young female swine, expecially one that has not                                                         produced  a litter
                                                      Barrow: a castrated male swine

Chicken: domestic fowl
Hen: an adult female chicken
Rooster: an adult male chicken
Chick: a young chicken
Pullett: young female bird less than 1 year of age
Cackerel: young male animal prior to sexual maturity at about 5 months of age
Bantam: Mini version of the larger breeds, being approximately one quarter the size
Broiler: young male or female birds raised for meat




Sheep: animals raised for their wool or meat
Ewe: female sheep of breeding age
Ram: adult male sheep that has reached sexual maturity at around 6 months of age
Lamb: young sheep
Wether: male castrated sheep
